Deoxygenation in the oxygen minimum zone of the eastern tropical North Atlantic

چکیده
[1] Observations and model results both indicate increasing oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) in the tropical oceans. Here we report on record low dissolved oxygen minimum concentrations in the eastern tropical North Atlantic in fall of 2008, with less than 40 mmol kg 1 in the core of the OMZ. There we find a deoxygenation rate of 0.5 mmol kg 1 a 1 during the last decades on two repeat sections at 7.5 and 11 N. The potential temperature and salinity in the surface and central water layers increased on both sections compared to previous observations. However, in contrast to the oxygen decrease in the core of the OMZ, increasing oxygen concentrations were observed in the central water layer above the OMZ. The observed deoxygenation was thus restricted to the core of the oxygen minimum layer. It remains unclear whether the vertical expansion of the oxygen minimum represents a long time trend or decadal variations. Citation: Stramma, L., M. Visbeck, P. Brandt, T. Tanhua, and D. Hidden biosphere in an oxygen-deficient Atlantic open-ocean eddy: future implications of ocean deoxygenation on primary production in the eastern tropical North Atlantic
The eastern tropical North Atlantic (ETNA) is characterized by a highly productive coastal upwelling system and a moderate oxygen minimum zone with lowest open-ocean oxygen (O2) concentrations of approximately 40 μmol kg. The recent discovery of re-occurring mesoscale eddies with close to anoxic O2 concentrations (< 1 μmol kg) located just below the mixed layer has challenged our understanding ...
متن کاملChanges in the Ventilation of the Oxygen Minimum Zone of the Tropical North Atlantic
Changes in the ventilation of the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of the tropical North Atlantic are studied using oceanographic data from 18 research cruises carried out between 28.58 and 238W during 1999–2008 as well as historical data referring to the period 1972–85. In the core of the OMZ at about 400-m depth, a highly significant oxygen decrease of about 15 mmol kg is found between the two perio...
متن کاملDeoxygenation alters bacterial diversity and community composition in the ocean's largest oxygen minimum zone.
Oceanic oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) have a central role in biogeochemical cycles and are expanding as a consequence of climate change, yet how deoxygenation will affect the microbial communities that control these cycles is unclear. Here we sample across dissolved oxygen gradients in the oceans' largest OMZ and show that bacterial richness displays a unimodal pattern with decreasing dissolved o...
متن کاملOxygen minimum zone expansion in the eastern tropical North Pacific during deglaciation
[1] During deglaciation at 17 ka the intensity and footprint of the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) increased in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) before a subsequent expansion on the California Margin. Evidence for the earlier increase is found in trace metal concentrations, lamination preservation and dN values from cores located between 540–750 m water depth in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, Sou...
